“The Canadian travel agent used by Moammar Gadhafi to funnel money to terrorists expressed deep sadness Thursday about the killing of the deposed Libyan dictator.
“I’m really sad about the whole thing. Too many people got killed and the place is in shambles,” said Assem Fadel, head of World Islamic Call Society, which is based in London, Ont.
“We are human beings and should act like human beings. We should respect the dead, bury him in a decent way and move forward. Unfortunately, that is not the case today,” said Fadel, who was upset about broadcasted images of a bloodied and dead Gadhafi.
In March, The Citizen reported that the federal government revoked the society’s charitable status. The government said it was established as a front by Gadhafi to distribute “Jihad fund” to terrorists — including a Muslim militant cell implicated in a 2007 plot to blow up JFK airport in New York City.
Federal documents obtained by The Citizen show that the society had transferred $170,814.20 to Jamaat al-Muslimeen, a terrorist group known for a campaign of torture and murder. This same group once attempted to overthrow the elected government of Trinidad and Tobago. Canada Revenue Agency documents also show that the charity transferred $10,000 directly to the terrorist group’s leader, Yasin Abu Bakr.
In Gadhafi’s scheme, according to federal government files, money was wired once a year in U.S. funds to the personal bank account of Fadel, then transferred to the bank account of the World Islamic Call Society’s Canadian branch, only to be distributed to known terrorist organizations.”
