  1. I bought my own boots. The issue boots at the time, late 1980s, were not waterproof. I got tired of wet feet and bought a pair of U.S. boots with a gortex liner and 200 grams of Thinsulate. We all began buying U.S raingear in the 80s because our gear was shit. Eventually we were issued better raingear and gortex jackets, to replace our cotton-based jackets. Our Combat uniform was mostly nylon, which was flammable. I still have a lot of the gear I bought back then, and I still use the boots for camping. When my son joined about 2006 he was issued all the new Gucci kit. It all seemed to be of good quality, including gortex boots and raingear. Everything seemed to be CADPAT camouflage as well. I had thought that all the shortages had ended, but I guess incompetence springs from an inexhaustible well.

  2. On behalf of all decent Canadians, I’m sorry.

  3. I don’t blame the public, just our incompetent National defence HQ. The entire regular force Army, Navy , and Airforce only number 50K, but NDHQ (or as we called it, the Puzzle Palace, or Ft Fumble), numbers 6,000! If you haven’t already, read Tarnished Brass, by Scott Taylor.

  4. Thank you for your service, Jay
