The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, a Minnesota-based activist group, has accepted a $75,000 grant from the Foundation for Deep Ecology for — and we quote — “a campaign to end industrial agriculture.”
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) repeatedly attacks groups for accepting industry funding to conduct research. But CSPI itself took $50,000 from the Helena Rubenstein Foundation to fund an attack campaign against the fat substitute Olestra.

How do they get away with it? And how do they dupe foundations into handing over the loot?

Sometimes the foundations aren’t to blame. Grant requests may be sufficiently vague to convince donors to pay for politicized polemics under the guise of “research.” But many times the foundations are not what you would expect them to be.

Though they carry names like “Ford,” “Hewlett,” or “Pew,” in reality most of them are no longer controlled by the businesses and families that created them. Well-paid social engineers have since taken the reins. They have their own political agendas, and often direct big bucks to their friends in the activist world.

Sometimes foundation money flows through its initial recipients, and on to others. The Pew Charitable Trusts (money from the Sun Oil Company) and the David and Lucille Packard Foundation (Hewlett-Packard wealth) are just two of the financers of the shadowy Tides Foundation — which in turn funds many of the organizations tracked on this site, preserving the anonymity of the original donors.

Another big reason activist groups are able to take the money and run: Nobody’s been watching them and providing this level of research. Until now.”

Appeals of Shafias, convicted honour killers, move forward

A Montreal man, convicted along with his mother and father of murdering four family members, has complained to Ontario’s top court that the trial was “unfair” because of “abusive” questioning of his mother by a Crown lawyer during the trial. The new claim is contained in a document (read it after the jump) filed at the Court of Appeal for Ontario on behalf of Hamed Shafia, 21, (inset) who was convicted in January of four counts of first-degree murder, along with his mother Tooba Yahya Mohammad, 43, and his father, Mohammad Shafia, 59. The three, natives of Afghanistan who came to Canada in 2007, were sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

“The cross examination of the Appellant’s co-accused, Tooba Yahya Mohammad, was protracted, abusive and repetitious to the extent that it rendered the trial unfair,” states the notice of appeal filed by Patrick McCann, the lawyer acting for Hamed Shafia. McCann also represented him during the trial. Immediately after the convictions, all three Shafias filed appeals but Hamed is the first of the trio to file a more detailed notice setting out grounds. The notice asks that the convictions be quashed and a new trial ordered.

Terrorizing tourists in Egypt

At Egypt’s Pyramids, the desperation of vendors to sell can be a little frightening for some tourists.

Young men descend on any car with foreigners in it blocks before it reaches the more than 4,500 year-old Wonder of the World. They bang on car doors and hoods, some waving the sticks and whips they use for driving camels, demanding the tourists come to their shop or ride their camel or just give money.

In the southern city of Aswan, tour operator Ashraf Ibrahim was recently taking a group to a historic mosque when a mob of angry horse carriage drivers trapped them inside, trying to force them to take rides. The drivers told Ibrahim to steer business their way in the future or else they’d burn his tourist buses, he said.

This is what you might call a bit of mopping-up after my free speech battles in Canada. We won, and we got the law in question, Section 13, repealed last summer. But along the way we pointed out that the plaintiff on all but one of those Section 13 “hate speech” cases since the turn of the century had been the same man – a civil servant called Richard Warman, who appointed himself Canada’s Hatefinder-General and brought highly lucrative “hate” complaints against anyone who crossed him. Since the repeal of his own personal revenge law, he can’t file “hate” complaints anymore, so instead he’s filing nuisance law suits against the bloggers who exposed him.

Arnie Lemaire of the Blazing Cat Fur website is one of those bloggers, a man who breaks a lot of news the cowed politically correct ninnies at the big dailies won’t go anywhere near until he’s made them too big to ignore – like the Toronto middle-school “Mosqueteria” story, in which he exposed a Canadian public school that converts its cafeteria into a mosque every Friday and segregates its girls according to whether they’re menstruating or not.

I’ve been involved in cases like these from Copenhagen to Melbourne, and I’m mighty sick of people who find it easier to sue you into silence than argue their case on the merits.

Iran to produce animation on real Holocaust

“The production of cinematic animation Blood from Heaven, about the first holocaust by the Jews in human history, has been launched.

This animation film depicts a historical tragedy, based on Quranic verses and well-documented and researched sources, the first holocaust by the man on earth. It is a disturbing tale of a Christian city which became victim to the burning fire of extremist Jewish (Zionist) religious fanaticism.

Najran, a Yemeni prominent city before the advent of Islam, witnesses Christian’s brutal massacre by the Zionist rulers of the city. Najran is famous for its archeological sites. People of Najran converted to Christianity with the call of the missionary.

Iranian officials tell citizens to vacate city located near nuke site

Iranian officials have instructed residents of Isfahan to leave the city, renewing concerns that a nearby nuclear site could be leaking radioactive material.

An edict issued Wednesday by Iranian authorities orders Isfahan’s one-and-a-half million people to leave the city “because pollution has now reached emergency levels,” the BBC reported.

However, outside observers suspect that the evacuation order may corroborate previous reports indicating that a uranium enrichment facility near Isfahan had been leaking radioactive material.

Tehran went to great lengths in December to deny these reports, telling state-run media outlets that “the rumors about leaking and contamination at Isfahan’s [Uranium Conversion Facility] are not true at all.”

November reports indicated that a radioactive leak might have poisoned several workers at the nuclear plant, which converts highly toxic yellowcake uranium into material that could be used in the core of a nuclear weapon.

The head of Iran’s emergency services agency said at the time that residents have no reason to worry about possible contamination resulting from a possible leak.

Stories about the potential leak soon disappeared from state-run news websites, Trend reported in late November.

Iranian officials denied that a leak has occurred and blamed Western media outlets for creating “tumult” in the region.

Wednesday’s evacuation order is now fueling concerns that Iranian officials are trying to hide something, including further fallout from a possible radioactive leak.

“Pollution in Isfahan is a problem but in the past, Iranian authorities respond by closing schools and the government to keep people at home and let the pollution dissipate, not by evacuating people,” said Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon adviser on Iran and Iraq who has written about Isfahan’s battle against pollution.

“Mass evacuations suggest a far more serious problem,” Rubin explained. “There are two possibilities here: There is a radiation leak and the regime is lying or there is really bad pollution and no one believes the regime’s explanations.”

Rubin also pointed out that Iranian officials have a history of lying to both Western officials and their own citizens.

It remains unclear whether the technology has been properly inspected for safety because Iran has denied Western officials access to many of its nuclear sites.

The nuclear site at Isfahan has been targeted for attack in the past.

An unexplained explosion at the plant in 2011 is reported to have damaged the facility.

The nuclear plant also sits on an active fault line. The city of Isfahan has been destroyed at least six times from past earthquakes, a point of concern among regional experts.

“Given that Iran is on an earthquake zone and has lost tens of thousands of people with regularity suggests that a devastating nuclear accident is only a matter of time,” said Rubin.
